A Sisterhood Worthy of Lasting A Lifetime

Sabrina Harbin, Delta Tau (University of Alabama in Huntsville), Ritual Education Ambassador
What exactly do people look for when seeking to join Greek Life? They may be looking for leadership opportunities, professional development, lasting memories, or a reliable support system. For me, it was about creating a network at a university mostly filled with male students focusing on different engineering fields. To me, sisterhood signified a shared sense of belonging. However, when I joined AOII, it transformed into so much more. So, what makes AOII a sisterhood that lasts a lifetime? Here are my thoughts.
AOII’s foundation of love and acceptance is a major reason this sisterhood can last a lifetime. These core principles are essential for any organization, and I believe people often take it for granted. To truly accept another person, call them your sister, and offer them the deepest emotion of love—no matter how different they may be from you—is a profound act. Something I once shared with a new member class as an advisor, which I’m sure I heard from one of my own advisors, was that to know an AOII is to know love; and I still believe that to be true.
Another statement I have heard repeatedly about AOII—and have personally found to be true—is that AOII members are genuinely lovely people. To be genuine means to authentically express yourself and build relationships grounded in trust and respect. I have met many AOII sisters across the country, and I almost instantly feel a sense of authenticity with each one. A sisterhood that allows you to be unapologetically yourself will endure through time. Ultimately, in a world where people often try to be someone they aren’t, sometimes all you want is to be yourself around others who will accept you.
AOII continuously reminds its members that AOII isn’t just for four years; it’s for a lifetime. It’s a commitment to one another, a promise to always be sisters. No matter where you are, AOII values you and what you bring. These reasons explain why this sisterhood, this organization, deserves to last a lifetime—one filled with love, laughter, connection, and authenticity among each other. Doesn’t that sound like something worth holding onto and nurturing?
