Lately, I find myself reflecting on my life journey, both personally and professionally. Specifically reflecting on having endured a successful career in higher education, deciding to step away from the higher education world and enter a new phase of giving back to those areas that over my lifetime brought fulfillment. As I reflect, I continuously found a common thread throughout my adulthood… AOII. Ironically this reflection coincides with completing my service on the AOII Properties Board this summer. I am reminded of how integral our sisterhood is in my life.

I am intrigued when asked why I stay involved in my sorority. My initial comment is usually “Why not”? Then I share how being a part of this amazing sisterhood transformed who I am, and I cannot imagine a life without my sisters. Each AOII volunteer role has paved the way not only for utilizing my knowledge and skills to assist others but I would be remiss if I didn’t share that I too got something back from those experiences, including a lifetime of friendships, the ability to enhance my leadership skills and significant networking opportunities. I truly believe I am a better person today because of my continuous involvement in AOII.

I am most grateful to the women who led before me, with me, and will lead after me, and hoping that each of my volunteer experiences made those within this dynamic organization a better place.

As I reflect, I am reminded of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle. His optimism inspires millions, including me, to look at why I do what I do and find my purpose in AOII. So, I recently asked myself, why a lifetime of AOII? I found myself going through my journey, always coming back to my AOII Why through our values “to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty.” Ironically, my professional and personal journey seemed to intertwine with these values too. AOII taught me the value of giving back through volunteering, and the transformative power of service.

Today, I find myself focused on those organizations whose values align with my own, that I can impact others’ lives while continuing to be impacted by those I serve. I look forward to seeing where my AOII journey takes me next and am optimistic about continuing this journey with a lifetime of friends who share these ideals and values. So, I want to encourage you to take some time and reflect on your AOII journey, your AOII Why, and identify your most “fulfilled” why and ask yourself:

    1. What impact do I want to have on my AOII legacy?
    2. Can I articulate to others my AOII Why?
    3. How do I live my AOII Why?
    4. How can my AOII Why inspire those around me?

I challenge you to inspire change, lead with purpose, and make a difference in every role you assume in AOII and your life’s journey.
